WRITERS ISSUES

  • Writers block : I had heard about a 'Writer's Block' several times, and often wondered what it was. Until of course I myself faced it. Its not a block when you stop writing altogether, rather its a block when you are stuck at writing about something particular. I had got enrolled for a particular 'Get Published' contest in Nov end, and, till the last date of submission my idea was voted, and remained at the Top No.3 position. However, I had not yet written the story. I thought that I'll write after the results are declared. However, I did not write it even when the shortlisted results were announced. The story that I had thought way back in Nov the previous year, was simply not coming back to me. I did have a vague idea about what it was, but when it came to writing it down, I'd go all blank. March had already approached and hardly a few days were left now, but my mind was still blank about the story. Meanwhile, I kept posting my regular blog posts. I even posted couple of short stories elsewhere, but strangely this particular story was still not coming to my mind properly. I was having a Writer's block, I realised.
Once day, I forced myself to sit and keep typing till I had some kinda story out rather than keep on postponing the whole thing as I was doing so far. Ultimately, I did manage to finish and submitted it on first week of March itself, but was it the story I had originally planned? Hard to say. Was I satisfied with it? Not really. Maybe, if I had written it back in Nov, it would have shaped up much better. But now, after the initial steam had vanished, I was not so sure about the end 'product' that I created. I could only hope the publishers approved of it :-)
Moral of the story - Write down the story when the idea is still fresh, if you keep postponing the end result may not usually be the one you had initially envisioned or hoped.

  • Bloggers Dilemma! ~ comments or no comments : My blog was started way back in 2010, but if you see the earlier posts, you'll hardly see any comments in it. I never really promoted it anywhere, but since it was attached to my Facebook Page, some people occasionally did drop in. They'd read and then vanished. But I didn't see anyone commenting. To be frank, I was 'okay' with it, as I knew that I did get a few visits. Only after I joined the blogging communities did I become aware of this issue. My purpose of joining was simple - 'curiosity'. I knew these communities existed from a long time, but I wasn't attracted enough to join them ( or maybe I was just too busy to give it a thought ). Anyways, I did join and started coming across posts/cartoons/poems about people commenting or not commenting on the posts. It was funny to read them at first, but I saw a pattern of negativity in them as well. Of course, I realised the biggest truth, that most blog readers are other fellow bloggers who are apparently trying to promote their blogs as well. 'Scratch my back, I'll scratch yours', kinda situation. It reminded me of the Amazon Authors Forum, where other authors spam the place with their books, not realising that it is an author's forum; hence, the other authors would be least interested in buying their books, as they are selling theirs too. Deja Vu' I felt

Yes, it does feel good if someone comments, but I think we should not be so ever expectant and obsessed about it, that we let it rule our minds. I almost felt sorry when I read a poem, pleading readers ( read - other bloggers ) not to give short comments. Why does a blogger of that caliber need to make such post?

  • Writers Insecurity ~ leads them to write negative about other bloggers : I came across another blogger who made a post rubbishing all bloggers altogether. He wants the whole breed to vanish. Why is he so insecure?

A blog as I know it, is an online diary of sorts where people can scribble anything they want ( thats their right ). However, to see other bloggers feeling insecure and making such blasting negative posts about other bloggers is saddening. If you want to be famous, go write a book and publish it. Its silly to want to be famous by ridiculing other bloggers and wanting them not to exist. It only speaks of narrow mindedness, insecurity, and, need I add mindless jealousy? Blogspot/Wordpress or even blogging communities thrives on these bloggers; else, they'd go bankrupt with a handful of 'I'm the best writer on this planet, hence, others donot deserve to exist' type narssicist writers. Quality matters no doubt, but what is quality? Who will decide that? What works for you, may not work for me. I may find these snobbish writers who uses all these unpronounciable words, thinking themselves as Shakespheare extremely boring. Rather, I might prefer someone who writes simple yet interesting.

Prudish writers scorn at Chetan Bhagat, ( though I'm not really his fan ) all the time, thrashing him, but whole India loves him. See, how many movies got made on his books that people enjoyed. So, think twice before you point fingers at others for mediocrity etc. Some people may not be a fan of your writings at all though you may be surrounded by some sycophants all the time. I also saw some bloggers making cartoons of other bloggers day in and day out. Why be so obsessed about what other bloggers are doing, I wonder. One may say, that this post of mine is also doing the same, i.e criticising others. Then let me clarify that, 'No', it is not. I saw too much negativity being spewed by so called popular bloggers towards others, hence I was prompted to write. Otherwise, I really couldn't care less.

  • English Vinglish fancy 'literary' words vs normal prose : I always prefer simple, lucid style of writing rather than using complicated unnecessary words/phrases that makes you carry a dictionary every time you read something like that. I came across some comments on a person's blog post that made me laugh out. The blogger apparently uses all the complicated language possible, even for replying a comment ( which we normal people do so in simple spoken language ), and is surrounded by sycophants that is giving him the illusion that he is the best writer around. So, some of those comments I read were, "I absolutely loved your post though I admit, I had to look up some of the words/terms" ( i.e googled ), "Your posts are like rocket science for me, but I loved it anyways, its awesome". So, that means, they didn't understand a word of the post, yet, were praising blindly away. What can be more hilarious than that?
People ( esp brown-Indians-wanna-be-british ) think that if someone is using words unheard of or not used regularly, they are great writers. Does simply using grand words make you a great writer, though the readers may not have understood a single word of it or is that one a writer who makes an instant connect with readers? I prefer the latter one anyday.

  • Cheating to Win Blogging Contest...voting : I saw some instances that shocked me quite a bit and it was an eye opener. In a recent get published contest, the contestants had to collect votes. So, while everyone else was begging, mailing others to vote for them, two entrants zoomed to the top with highest number of votes. It raised bit suspicion when the two started to compete for the top position. if one was on top the other would get hundreds of votes mysteriously within a short time and reach the top. Then again the other would do the same. I tried refreshing the page and was shocked to see them getting votes by the hundreds within seconds of each other. Was it really possible?? I don't think so. I checked their fb /twitter pages and all, they didn't have that many subscribers as much as they got votes, so my guess was ~ hanky panky can't be ruled out.
In some other contests like the cooking contest, I saw one food blogger who posted the maximum entries, post another one with another name via another blog. There was also one who already posted 2 entries, posted another one via new blog which funnily was created just to enter the contest. Also, some of the pictures where the image was to be put was artificially photoshopped. in same contest I also saw instances of recipes lifted from other sources. I mean, it was still 'olive' oil in the recipe entry when supposedly that person was writing for another oil brand. Was it really a human typo? Unlikely!

  • Earning with Writing : This is quite a grey area esp with regards to blogging. It can be extreme black or white too, but its not constant. Its never a steady job like a regular 9-5 or even a private business entrepreneurship that guarantees a sale at the end of the day. With emergence of platforms like instagram/snapchat/tiktok/youtube etc blogging has been hijacked to some extent. A top blog however with good amount of visitors can still easily earn decently via various means like advertising, affiliate marketing, adsense, freelancing, sponsored posts, collaborations etc. But same is not the case with all blogs. So, it can vary and can be very frustrating for a newcomer.

  • Blogging got hijacked! ~ by the shorts and reels culture - instagram, snapchat, youtube etc : The whole topography of content creation and consumption has changed. Sprouting of countless social media platforms with visual reels, expressions and creativity has altered the scenario. Blogging/Writing has been hijacked and pushed into abyss almost - the realm of "classic' expression, with people getting more accustomed to swiping than actually reading. Story telling has changed, and brands too give preference to visuals and numbers due to shorter attention span of consumers.

    INDIAN AUTHORS

Although I write,I'm not into heavy literature stuff myself and I must confess that apart from the certain highly acclaimed english authors whose work we had to compulsorily read in our school english literature classes my exposure to heavy literary authors is quite limited.I always preferred popular books such as Nancy Drew,Hardy Boys,Enid Blyton's and Agatha Christie's books and tonnes of Mills&Boon romances, not to mention Archie comics. These books are what I consider light reads.I never attempted to read a Jackie Collins or a Sidney Sheldon and others who wrote fairly thick books with high dose of literary stuff added in.So maybe I am missing out on many great books or maybe not.Among Indian authors too I have chosen to read only two popular authors having ignored the rest. They are Shobha De and Chetan Bhagat. Both have been best selling authors. However,I cant say that they are the best because many times I didnt agree with their style of writing at all.

    SHOBHA DE :
Lets start with Shobha De.I read her books when I was still in school.I have 5 of her titles with me.Her subjects are always glorious, ultra hep, over the top and artificial if I may add.Even if you own the book ( having paid for it obviously ) her stories donot belong to you at any level. She mostly writes about high society people, models or the glamour world which are out of bounds for ordinary people so the stories donot touch your heart as you simply donot identify with the characters. Her books are included as international study material in a few other countries which is no doubt an honour for her but her stories simply donot touch you.Thats what I feel. You remain indifferent with a somewhat cold feeling. She does not use heavy literary words or phrases yet it makes no sense at times. You end up with a feeling 'who cares' and is not curious to know about her next release at all.But she is a famous name so obviously some people may have liked her writing.
Her blogs and columns that she writes leaves you high and dry as well.

    CHETAN BHAGAT :

I was not at all curious about this writer though I had heard a lot about him for years! Thanks to the movie '3 Idiots' which made him ultra famous followed by 'Hello'.One guy near the station was selling second hand books quite cheap,so when I found his titles I picked them up ( 5 books ) just to study his writing style. Now Bhagat writes pure desi.He writes about ordinary people so even if you are critical his stories manages to touch you.He writes simple english as anyone would write or talk in real life,no heavy literature.I wont say I was disappointed because I had really expected nothing in the begining.Maybe because he writes simple and identifiable characters,he is so popular among the youngsters.I have observed his columns in newspapers and they are quite thought provoking so you are curious to read what he'd come up with next.He has been trashed for poor literature, but the massive sale of his books forgives it all.So two writers having two drastically opposite impact on me.
So who is currently my favourite ?
    Hmmm..any guesses?

P.S : Do give me suggestions which other Indian Authors I should read ( but no heavy literature please! )

    ARE YOU CREATIVE?

Not everyone can be Creative.Artistic Creativity comes from within. You can learn the techniques of singing, you may also sing better than other professional singers but you may not be able to create a new song altogether.Similarly you may draw or paint very well by learning it,and make a painting as good as a 'Monalisa',but to create your own masterpiece ( something that has not been done by anyone else before ) needs a highly creative bone.Likewise for writers, everybody who goes to school can read and write, you may even learn the language to perfection, but when you try to sit down and write your own story, your mind may go totally blank.Because if you are not creative at heart, you'll find it very difficult to create your own characters and plot your story to perfection. It requires a very creative mind to weave a story.

All these 3 fields i.e Music,Painting or Writing are highly creative areas. You may be a part of it indirectly by singing other people's songs,or imitating someone else's art or even memorise all of Shakesphere's plays and remember them even better than Shakesphere himself, but if you are not a creative person you'll never be able to create your 'own' work like Shakesphere or the other writers did. There is no school in this world that teaches a subject called 'creativity'.It is a unique talent which either you have it or you dont.Creative people have that little 'extra' which others dont.If you realise early that you have a creative bone you keep working at it to make it perfect.
Creativity comes naturally. You wont require others to tell you to create something,it will come automatically to you.Ideas will instantly start pouring in your mind.
If you're into music your mind will constantly keep playing new tunes all the time.
If you are a painter you'll see colours taking shape in your mind into various objects or landscapes.

And if you are a writer then new stories and ideas will plot by themselves in your mind.
As soon as these tunes, colours or ideas come in your mind, you will feel the urge to express them immediately by capturing it into your medium.A musician will record it,a painter will splash colours into his canvas and a writer will write it down. After the initial idea is captured the creative person would then work on his craft, keep polishing it till it is perfect and presentable to an audience.
However, that initial 'idea' is what makes a creative person, and that is most important.Because without that original idea you are just nothing but an ordinary person. It is that initial 'original' idea that makes the creative person what he is i.e unique and special. So,try to see if you get an original idea.If it comes then you have the chance to call yourself a creative person. But it is not as easy as it sounds because everyone is not designed to be creative.Only few people can be creative and rest are the audience.

While all these three fields are mediums of expression and captures the attention of many people around the globe, creativity has certain guidelines that one has to adhere to.Some principles and ethics to follow for it to be a respectable art. There are a fine line that seperates a classic art from vulgarity, intense write up from defamations or in case of music plagarism i.e by lifting off someone else's tunes and claiming it as your own.

Just because you have the creative freedom which your State allows you to have, you simply cannot just create any and everything that would hurt people at large.Eg. MF.Hussain's controversial paintings of hindu gods or the Danish cartoons depicting a Prophet. Both these artists managed to hurt certain communities a lot which is highly condemnable.

Painting vulgar, pornographic images deliberately to hurt someone is simply not an art but an abuse of it.Fine arts does allow nudes whether in canvas or sculptures and is a great creative medium, but to use it as the renowned painter MF.Hussain did to insult hindu dieties by naming his naked paintings ( all in objectionable positions ) after the revered hindu gods.It was a deliberate mischief and hence not an art.
Many musicians too have lifted other's compositions and have passed it as their own.It is clearly a blatant misuse of creative expression and hence a crime.
Bollywood abounds with such lifting-off of tunes which includes big names such as RD.Burman,Annu Malik,Bappi Lahiri,Pritam etc. These composers have blatantly lifted other people's work and credited it to themselves. They mainly lift western or arabic numbers, and copyright laws being not tight they have escaped the law.
Writers too have a responsibility.Writers have a great weapon, their 'pen',which can influence people's mind.A simple writing can create a revolution, hence it is the most powerful medium of expression.Writing truth should be the priority. There is a category named,'fiction' to accomodate all the imaginary stuff. But if you are writing non-fiction then you have to write everything authentic and accurate. You should not deliberately make up false stories or claims or defame anyone.Defamation is when you write false things about someone or name someone in your false claims.
In that case you can be sued.eg. I named few musicians earlier for plagarism,I cannot do it unless I have solid facts ( which I have in this case )else it'll be a defamation.

Also you should not lift off other people's writing and claim it as your own,it is plain plagarism. You should also avoid writing objectionable things such as pedophile or beastily acts.Writers do write a fair amount of adult or violent stuff, however they should stay within the permissible limits of freedom of expression and not cause deliberate harm or damage to anyone,or even incite others with hateful content.
If you are indeed writing a controversial article that may ruffle a few feathers always write it in 3rd person. That way you can speak the truth without naming anyone directly in it.
So,these are some of the things to be aware of in your creative pursuits.
    Hope it helps.

    FREEDOM OF EXPRESSION

What is Freedom of Expression -
If you are living in the USA first thing you are ( or should be ) aware of is that USA stands for Freedom.Freedom of speech and freedom of expression. If you were not aware of it,try going through your children's school books all over again and learn America's history and its main foundation i.e its freedom that it grants to its citizens.Rest of the world looks upto the US for the freedom of speech that it advocates. So,if you are living in America and try to bully or blackmail, threaten or try to crush someone's freedom of expression then you are going against the very principles of the country that you are living in.

    What is Blogging -
Blogging is essentially an online diary for a person to record their daily activities or to express their opinions regarding a wide range of subjects.Sometimes these subjects can be of controverial nature too, nonetheless an individual has absolute and full freedom to voice their opinions and write as per their wish. And a writer writes. It is the job of the writer to write in order to convey their opinion to the readers ( being fully aware of their rights and responsibilities ).

    What can you write -
Internet Companies like Google or Wordpress encouraging an individual's 'freedom of speech & expression', provides free blogging platforms for the bloggers ( their users ) to jot down their thoughts and opinions. However they do have certain terms and conditions, rules & regulations regarding the contents to be published, which a blogger cannot violate. These rules are clearly prescribed in their agreement.

    What can you object -
If some content violates some of the rules, then a reader can object and forward their complaint. They should however go through the entire content policy first and then make it clear which part the content exactly violates. If a reader objects to certain controversial stuff or criticisms regarding a certain individual then they need to check out a few pointers first.
    - Is the article content true or false?
    - Is it taking some other individual's name and other private info such as contact details, photographs etc and making false claims?

A writer has full liberty to take an individual's name or use a photograph of that individual too ( in public ) as long as the content that they provide along with it is true, accurate and can be proven in court should a dispute occur. If the content is true ( however controversial ) then also nobody can object to it,and the writer i.e the blogger has full right to write it.
Sometimes if a writer writes a content in 3rd person i.e without taking anyone's name in particular, then nobody has the right to object. However,if the reader ( still unable to digest criticism ) starts blackmailing or threatening the writer to remove the content, then it is the reader who is committing the crime of 'harassment' to the writer who is just voicing their opinion ( that too without taking any names ).

    Remember 3 points :
    1. You cannot control a writer's thought process.
    2. Study first in what context an article is written. Is it mindless criticism or it has some social objective behind it.Is it written only to harm an individual or to help others taking the 'subject' as an example.
    3. Lastly and most importantly, learn to face criticisms.

    What do I write -
When I first started this blog my main intention ( as described in the 'disclaimer' below ) has been to voice my opinions responsibly. My blog also provides as a platform to inform everyone about my writing projects ie. my books as well as my music. My main subject in writing is 'Social Issues' - which are the problems that we see in the society eg.Marital problems, divorces, extra marital, sibling problems, child abuse, cancer, smoking, also problems in the music+glamour industry, job related, media etc besides other general stuff ( which includes music, fun, horror, entertainment, women issues, food, education, politics etc.In short everything under the sky !! And I also write content NOT suitable for under 18 ). I take examples from real life situations ( that I have either gathered from reliable sources or personally witnessed ). My effort is to write them as accurately as those incidents occurred.I write to spread awareness and simply for exchange of information.

My blog gets hundreds of visits from around the world,so I try to provide genuine "socially responsible" content that will make a reader identify with and also to help others. Now since my subject is primarily ( though not always ) 'social issues' and I base most of my blog articles from real life situations ( thus a bit controversial in nature ) I make it a point not to mention any individual's name, respecting their privacy, unless that person is a public figure. ( though I can mention names of those individuals as well if I want as well since my content is accurate ). So,I generally try to follow the ethics of writing while voicing my opinions. And nobody should have a problem with that.
I also urge the fellow writers to do the same.
ie. Write accurate. Write responsible.Write good.

    KINDLE MAGIC

    Sharing my Kindle Experience :

Till September-end this year I had absolutely no idea what a Kindle was.I accidently came across an article,'Kindle is evil' in a news portal.I thought maybe it was something related to paranormal ( anything 'evil' being my favourite subject ),however when I opened to read it,I came to realize that it was related to book publishing. And Amazon Kindle was essentially an Ebook reader which was slowly killing the big publishing houses. The article trashed the Kindle as an evil device that was changing people's reading habits.People were no longer buying traditional paper books, and anyone could now publish books and sell through Amazon Kindle with people actually buying them. Now,this sentence really made me curious and not to mention interested like hell.

Why?Because I had loads of stuff that was waiting to be published. However,my books were comparatively shorter than a usual full length novel that required 50k+ words and had to be around 280 pages long.My work were light read around 20k words or less.
So,instead of feeling angry at Kindle as the writer of the article wanted the readers to feel,I felt that Kindle was not at all an evil, rather it was a Boon.Instead of going through the hassles of traditional publishing, authors could now publish their own work, set up their own prices and keep the profits too. Moreover,Kindle was God sent as well, especially to the writers of short fiction,as Kindle allowed books of any length to be published and sold. This pointer really made me love and admire it more. Now,it got me working.I googled up all the information that I could get about Kindle, all the success stories.I found that everything was positive about Amazon Kindle. Thus,I signed up and uploaded all my books, and within 24 hours they were all 'live' at the Amazon Book Store.

Check my Amazon Author Page for list of my Books at Amazon!

Nothing happened for a while and the books sat rather quietly on the store.
Publicity!Marketing! These two words ran in my mind. After all does anything sell without publicity,or word-of-mouth?Hell No!If you dont let the word out that your books are available on the store,no one would come to know about it.So,I set up a strategy to market the books and plugged it at various platforms. My own platforms were this blog and also the Musikdiv Mag both of which gets hundreds of hits regularly. So,after the first quiet week,my books started moving off the shelf slowly but steadily. As the books get bought their rankings start jumping too tremendously.

And with the recently launched KDP Select,Amazon also made it possible for the authors to promote the books for free for a few days.It is a useful step to publicize your work and make your sales jump.I saw lots of positive activities with my books.Till now thousands of them have been sold,so that means that, that many people have my work up on their Kindle devices ( with the numbers growing up steadily ).It is an incredibly amazing feeling to have your self-created products ( whether it is music or books ) to sell.Which means that people are acknowledging and appreciating your work or talent. And for a creative person it is a very satisfying experience.I have more books waiting to go up on the Kindle so I am really excited about it.Kindle is definately the future!
    <

Kindle does have few drawbacks for its non-US publishers eg. its minor tax related issue where a lumpsum is deducted as tax from the royalties which do not apply for its US based authors. It also donot allow to add a non-US bank account for wire transfer. If these two issues are sorted out I'll truely become its biggest fan.
Moreover,Kindle is still a very new concept in India. As such my books are available right now only to the US and western readers.Indians still prefer the traditional paper books and are largely ignorant about ebooks or ereaders which are more popular in the west.I'd prefer the Indian readers to become aware of the Kindle because they get a much wider choice of authors and books. Moreover,a Kindle device can store upto 3k books and is portable that can be carried anywhere. So,there is lot of benefit in owning a Kindle.
