AFTER ALL THESE YEARS...

I remember, when I was barely sixteen,
You had approached me, and, expressed your feelings...
I had brushed them off, because,
those were on where I was least kneen.
Yes, you were dissappointed, and, I could see it in your eyes...
But, not losing hope, you still aproached me ~ again, yet, again...
You could not understand why I refused, and, I could not explain...
Well, I was too young, for one,
and, I mainly preferred romance in the movies ~ to happen...
Oh...I didn't tell you, but, there was one more thing...
I wanted to pursue my own sweet infinite dreams...

When opportunities came, I took off...
Flew away from the nest, as they say...
I came once or twice, maybe, even met you once,
But, my world was always so different,
The expectations of it, the thrill of it...
You didn't matter much.
I admit, in due time, my memories of you too died,
There wasn't much to remember, any way...
I met new people all the time,
Life in another city was such...
Yes, as I grew, I too experienced the roller-coaster called 'love',
It wasn't you, though, it was someone who mattered much,
But, like all love stories, mine too came to an end,
Again and again, as I discovered they were mere attractions,
never love,

Until, I saw you again...
After, not years, but decades...
I saw the yearn in your eyes, the pain in your heart,
as you approached me again...
I finally realized 'love', when I saw you had waited patiently all these years,
For me to come back, in your arms...

If you love someone set it free,
If it comes back, it is yours,
If it doesn't, it never was...

  2. Sigh!!! Your poem gave me chills all over! That first love when youth is unable to recognize it, embrace it. Simply a distraction on life's long loving journey ... until reality hits and the glory of a long lost love overwhelms. I love your poem.

  3. I have an aunt (now past) who got together with her high school admirer when they were in their seventies. Despite leading different separate lives on different continents he never lost his pining for her.
