SOCIAL MEDIA WEEK MUMBAI|BOMBAY 2014 - PART 2


So, continuing from part one ( see here ), this post covers Day4 and Day5 of the #SMWMumbai'2014, only the sessions I attended! ( and that's quite a few of them per day! ) The information gathered would turn into pages. Such sessions are priceless and only to be experienced live 'in-person', to really take it all in. Thanks a lot to #SMW & Blogadda for giving me such a wonderful opportunity :-)

Day - 4 ( 25thSept ):

1. 1st Session was "Are you making a difference in Social Media?" Hosted by Web Marketing Academy from 11:30 AM - 12:30 PM with the panel comprising of Khushbu Pandya ( Founder, Konvophilia Communications ), Ashwin Ramesh ( CEO, Organic Apex ), Arnab Ganguly ( Search Marketing, Tesco Telecom ), Pradeep Chopra ( CEO, Digital Vidya ) and Suresh Babu ( Founder & CEO, Web Marketing Academy ). Independent Event Marketing in Multi-format was about "Today we can’t live without social media, we share everything, interact with our friends, family, potential employer, future/existing customer. From the time we wake up till we go to bed, most of our time online are spent in social media. Are we making any difference while we are there? We discuss how one can make a difference in these channels."

Well, the session was nearing its end when I arrived, but from the gist of what I could make out, the conversations were related to your progress in Social Media. How much one has furored into it successfully. Lots of SEO stuff and lots of advises to optimize it. While one panelist said SEO was almost dead, and didn't matter anymore another Target expert contradicted ~ saying that its still relevant. Q/A between panelists and audiences are always very interesting and got to know more about differences between Google ads, Facebook ads - their advantages, disadvantages etc.

2. 2nd Session was "New Media Engagement in Television" Hosted by Media & Entertainment Network by TIE ( MENT ) 12:00 PM - 12:45 PM with the panel comprising of Ajay Kumar Meher ( Sr. Vice President & Head - IT and Post Production, Sony Entertainment Television ), Sumit Suri ( Core Committee Member at Media & Entertainment Network , TiE (MENT), Ashutosh ( Founder & CEO , Kanalytics ), Vivek Bhargava ( Managing Director, iProspect Communicate 2 ) and Ekalavya Bhattacharya ( Head Digital, MTV ). Independent Event in Media & Publishing was about "How television channels are leveraging new media to build and alternate engagement an distribution channel for their audience – Social Listening o Impact on programming o Sales. – Second Screen, – Programme Promotion – (Influencers, engagement), – Catch-Up / Mobisodes, – Distribution – YouTube v/s Owned."

3. 3rd Session was "Speed Blogging & ‘Tweetathon’" Hosted by Asif Upadhye ( Director, Yellow Seed Content Solutions ) from 12:00 PM - 1:00 PM. Independent Event Marketing in Multi-format was about "What’s this? A unique concept revolving around the idea of generating ‘tons of new content’ on a plethora of topics in a limited time frame’. Call this a battle of wits and a test of your abilities as a blogger and online junkie if you must. This is nothing short of Sparta! Get ready to create magic as you face a rapid fire of topics varying from technology, food, and social media to anything under the sun… all this with little twist and ‘tadka’. What’s more? Tweet your way to glory with topics that change every minute and a blog topic every 10 minutes. Awesome topics. Loads of fun and an insight into how we create and consume content. You can enrol: a. As an individual blogger / Tweet-master or b. As a team under a common tag (max. participants 02). Note: All you need is a smart phone if you are entering the Tweetathon and a laptop if you love the way your fingers work on one. We will have a few laptops available on a first come basis. And Yes! There is Wi-Fi at the venue!"

4. 4th Session was "ICONS & INSPIRATION - Part II" Hosted by Tanvi Bhatt ( Founder/Director Panache Studio ) from 12:30 PM - 1:00 PM with Lara Balsara ( Executive Director of Madison World ) on thought leader and social media.

5. 5th Session was "The emergence of new media powered content distribution channels" Hosted by Media & Entertainment Network by TIE (MENT) from 12:45 PM - 1:30 PM with the panel comprising of Rahul Golecha ( Founding Member, Programmer, Cinemacraft ), Harvinderjit Singh Bhatia ( Co-Founder , Radiowalla Network Private ), Anshu Mor ( Director - Interactive Entertainment Business, Microsoft Corporation (India) Pvt. Ltd. ) and Pratik Gupta ( Co-founder & Director - New Business & Innovation, FoxyMoron ). It was about "With the penetration of broadband & with data now consumed on all the 3 screens (Web, Mobile & TV), lets look at all the new avenues of distribution of data & how companies are changing their products to cater to the needs of these “millennia” consumers."

6. 6th Session was "INITIATING CHANGE - THE SOCIAL WAY" Hosted by Senthil Anand ( Head – Account Management , KRDS ) from 2:30 PM - 3:00 PM. Independent Society & Environment Presentation intermediate was about "Social Media has changed so many things in our day to day lives. But how can we use Social Media to activate a Social Change? A Session where we discuss different international campaigns in which Social Media was used effectively to intiate a real-life social change. In the workshop to follow we discuss and debate on ideas on how Brands and NGO’s could use Social Media to power their CSR activities and Objectives respectively."

7. 7th Session was "NEW MEDIA AN ENABLER: ARTIST - FAN DIRECT CONNECT" Hosted by Media & Entertainment Network by TIE (MENT) from 2:30 PM - 3:15 PM comprising of Leslie Lewis ( Indian Music composer, Musician ) and Soumini Paul ( Asst. Vice President - Product Head , ArtistAloud.com ). Independent Lifestyle & Culture in Multi-format beginner was about "The panel with Lesle Lewis is meant to get a bird’s eye view of how an artist has evolved over the last two decades and how does an artist deal with the growing demands of social media. Does an artist look at social media as a boon or a necessary evil? How easy is it to promote oneself? What does an artist expect from the different players in the industry – labels, platforms, festival promoters, etc."

8. 8th Session was "HOW ARE BRANDS AND CREATORS USING YOUTUBE TO BUILD AUDIENCES AND CAREERS" Hosted by Siddharth Narula ( President, Culture Machine Media Pvt. Ltd ) from 3:00 PM - 4:00 PM with the panel comprising of Sonal Sagaraya ( Beauty video blogger, Self-Employed ), Sameer Pitalwalla ( India's 1st Multi Channel Youtube Network, Culture Machine Media Pvt. Ltd ), Ashish Saini ( Head- Digital Marketing ( Passenger Vehicle Business Unit), Tata Motors ) and Aditi Mittal ( actress and writer, stand-up comedian ). Independent Lifestyle & Culture intermediate was about "Youtube is the world’s largest video platform and also a social network. This panel session will help given an insight on the burgeoning scene of digital video programming, technology and creators, moderated by Sameer Pitalwalla, CEO @ Culture Machine, India’s fastest growing Youtube network."

9. 9th Session was a "MASTER CLASS ON SHORTFORM JOURNALISM" Hosted by AVID Learning from 4:15 PM - 5:15 PM. Independent Media & Publishing Class was about "A masterclass on understanding the new realms of NEWS & media landscape where the power of palm devices and social media is challenging traditional news models and constantly redefining what news is, how it delivered and how it is consumed, with Editor of Scroll.in, Naresh Fernandes. Outline :-• Journalism beyond conventional mediums – newspapers, TV and Radio • The Evolution of Social media as a powerful tools for news communication: Challenge or opportunity • Publishing for newspapers v/s new age gadgets • Are social media, blogs, and the modern-day short attention span killing long-form journalism • The use of Social media to disseminate news in West v/s India • The fading existence of Newspapers and Newspapers as second hand information center • Citizen Journalism – News readers as reporters? • Seeding wrong news and information, Noise and false information generated by these networks • Social Media platforms and messaging apps as platform as opportunity of Newsgathering and analyze the phenomenon of “media catching,” a reversal of the traditional media relations’ • About Scroll and Success Factors"

10. 10th Session was "SOCIAL BOLLYWOOD – WHERE HOLLYWOOD MEETS BOLLYWOOD" Hosted by AVID Learning from 5:15 PM - 6:00 PM with panel comprising of Ratan Ginwalla ( Founder, New Clear Ideas (Marketing Consultancy) and Digit 9.0 (digital marketing), Pooja Kohli ( Producer, Director and Managing Director, Film Karvan ) and Malini Agarwal ( Blogger in chief @missmalini.com ). Independent Lifestyle & Culture was about "A discussion with Pooja Kohli, Ratan Ginawalla and Malini Agarwal on understanding the emerging trends and recent expansions in technologies and social media which is empowering Indian Cinema and evaluating the factors which is aiding its success on the Global Platform."

1. 1st Session was "DHARAVI GOES SOCIAL" Hosted by R Square Consulting from 2:00 PM - 2:20 PM with panel,comprising of Fahim ( Co - Founder, Be the local Tours ) and Tauseef ( Co- Founder, Be the Local Tours ). Independent Marketing was about "Dharavi Tours"

2, 2nd Session was "MARKETING IN THE EVER EVOLVING MARKET PLACE" Hosted by Viral Oza ( Director Marketing, Microsoft Devices Group ) from 3:00 PM - 3:30 PM. Independent Marketing.

3. 3rd Session was "FUTURE OF SOCIAL INTELLIGENCE" Hosted by Ranjit Nair ( CEO , Germin8 Solutions ) from 3:30 PM - 4:15 PM with the panel comprising of Aditya Save ( Marico’s Global Centre of Excellence for Digital and Media, Heads ), Jasneet Bachal ( Sr. Vice President –Group Marketing, Kotak Mahindra Bank Ltd. ), Karthik Nagarajan ( National Director – Social Media & Insights, Group M ) and Nikhil Dey ( President, Public Relations, Genesis Burson-Marsteller ). Independent Marketing was about "Social Media has been evolving at the rate of knots, and so has been the behaviour of consumers on it. They have newer ways to access and share content. The looming challenge is to predict the future of Social media and look at the implications of this change for Brands and Agencies. As the expert panel delves deep into the future, you can expect answers to the following questions and more · Would rise of Whatsapp and other messaging platforms spell the death knell for social media platforms altogether? · Will brands’ inability to reach out their total fanbase on Facebook result in an opportunity for a new social network? · What do apps like “Secret” mean for customer credibility and should the brands care? · With Internet of things fast becoming a reality, what are the opportunities and challenges for the brands"

4. 4th Session was "DIGITAL DIPLOMACY" Hosted by Manjeet Kripalani ( Executive Director, Gateway House

from 6:00 PM - 7:00 PM with the panel comprising of Matthias Lüfkens ( Managing Director, Digital, EMEA, Burson-Marsteller ), Ambassador Navdeep Suri ( Ambassador to Egypt, Ministry of External Affairs, India ), Ambassador Neelam Deo ( Director, former Ambassador, Gateway House ), T.V. Mohandas Pai ( Chairperson, Manipal Global Education Services Private Limited ) and Raheel Khursheed ( Head of News, Politics & Govt @TwitterIndia , Twitter ). Independent Politics & Government Google Hangout with hashtag #SMWDIPLOMACY and Fullscreen was about "Traditionally, foreign policy has been the exclusive domain of bureaucrats and diplomats. Social media has brought foreign policy discussions into the public domain, whether on divisive topics such as political crises and cyber security or conciliatory ones such as congratulating world leaders. Social media has played an instrumental role in election campaigns as well as crises situations where it has been used to communicate with the masses. World leaders, diplomats and bureaucrats are trying to reconcile with its growing popularity and power, and ideating on ways to use it productively at the personal and professional level. Must diplomacy evolve to keep pace with the meteoric rise of social media? Has digital diplomacy become a crucial instrument of foreign relations? How can diplomats harness the power of social media? What has digital diplomacy done to increase transparency? The event will take the form of an interactive panel discussion, bringing together high-level speakers from around the world on an online platform to engage with different audiences. Gateway House will host 4-6 experts from multiple locations on Google Hangout. The moderator will be physically present at the Mumbai venue, with an audience of 30-50 people. The event will be streamed live by Social Media Week, and on a Gateway House Google+ feed. The stream will be displayed via a projector at the venue so that a physical audience can view the discussion, and engage with the panelists through questions and comments. Segment One : Duration 30 minutes - The moderator will facilitate a discussion between the Gateway House panel of experts. During this period the live internet audience will be instructed to comment on the discussion and pose questions to the panelists on Twitter using relevant #s Segment Two : The panelists will now interact with the live internet audience. The moderator will curate the questions and pose a select number to the panelists. Select audience members online will be allowed to join the panel via Google+ Hangout and ask a question. The panelists will also be encouraged to answer questions that were not answered and to continue the discussion themselves on Twitter after the event is over. Target Audience: • International and Indian audience, approximately of ages 16 and above • Interested in foreign policy, Indian Foreign Service, politics, international business, global affairs and technology. 5. 5th Session was "THE UNQUIZ: TEST YOUR KNOWLEDGE OF THE BIGGEST BRAND SURPRISES ON SOCIAL MEDIA" Hosted by Ranjini Ramachandran ( Client Development Director,, Unmetric ) from 7:00 PM - 7:45 PM with the panel comprising of Yu Yu Din ( Head Digital Strategist , Genesis Burson-Marsteller ), Sanjay Tripathy ( Sr. EVP, Marketing, Product, Digital, and Ecommerce, HDFC Life ), Karthik Nagarajan ( National Director – Social Media & Insights, Group M ), Venke Sharma ( Head – Digital, Star ) and Milind Soman ( actor, film producer, Runner, model ). Independent Marketing was about "Join us for an entertaining and educational hour of rapid fire trivia questions (and answers) based on hard data from the world of social media and brands. Come and pit your knowledge and intuition against other digital media and marketing professionals, or just listen in to pick up some insightful factoids from the answers. If the questions don’t get you, the quizmasters will: Team Unmetric will be on hand to put the panel of experts on the spot and to bamboozle the audience to discover the true social media gurus."

6. 6th Session was "MAKING BUSINESS SOCIAL OR DOING SOCIAL BUSINESS?" Hosted by Harshit Desai ( Associate Director – Management Consulting, KPMG ) from 7:45 PM - 8:15 PM with the panel comprising of Rishi Kakar ( Director Marketing, IDFC Asset Management Company P Ltd ), Girish Rao ( Head IT , Marico Industries ), Devita Saraf ( CEO , Vu Technologies ), Priten Bangdiwala ( Head Digital Business & VP IT , Aditya Birla Group Ltd ) and Partha Sinha ( Director, Publicis Worldwide ). Independent Marketing in Multi-format was about "Is it really happening or are we creating mere illusions of businesses doing social good? Businesses have increasingly embarked on social causes using new age media and gathered enormous momentum and traction. May it be Icebucket or AmINext challenge, are we seeing real value being delivered to business/causes or are we still away from it? While moving along the progressive ladder from social beings to being social, we have surely made our mark, but in hindsight it looks more like a beginning. We’ll actually have to decipher these social dots and craft out a pattern which is not only sustainable but efficient and intelligent too. So let’s try and fathom if Social will disrupt business model or businesses will reshape social well-being.

7. 7th Session was "BOLLYWOOD TROLLING: FUN & NEW AGE" Hosted by Express Group from 8:15 PM - 9:00 PM with the panel comprising of Huma Quereshi ( Actress, Bollywood ), Ritesh Deshmukh ( Architect, Film Producer & Actor, Bollywood ), Gursimran Khamba ( Co-founder, All India Bakchod ), Rohan Joshi ( Writer, Stand-up Comedian ), Tanmay Bhat ( Co founder, All India Bakchod ) and Ashish Shakya ( Humour columnist, Hindustan Times ). Independent Lifestyle & Culture was about "Not all panel discussions are meant to ‘chew your brain’. Here is a fun session to troll on Bollywood and to discuss on how Bollywood has gone more social and conversational with the emerge of Social Media. Caution: Join us only if you enjoy some serious fun."

Social Media Week is a worldwide event that touches the social, cultural and economic impact of social media, hence, every person who is into social media would find its relevance in some way or the other. Collaboration, learning and Sharing being the core. It was held simultaneously in 11 cities of the World, with '#SMWMumbai' as a city that trended the highest. Divided into four categories, the sessions where held in these different halls or stages that catered to those specific related topics. eg. Social Community Stage, Pioneer stage, Media & entertainment Stage and Learning Stage in formats of Class, Multi-format, Networking Mixer, Panel Presentation, Demo, Google Hangout, Keynote.
