FOOD AS RITUAL ON MAGH BIHU

As life passes by, faster than any bullet train or jet,
we barely remember the previous day, what happened,
but, there remains some memories of past that still linger,
those that makes our eyes twinkle, and smiles, wider...

Festivals come, festivals go...
one after the other we so enjoyed them all,
but, there's one that we always looked forward,
one whole year, because there was lots of foods involved...

In mid-jan, when its biting cold in zero degrees,
the community gathers for a festival. unique,
one, that involves staying up the whole night,
rejoicing with music blaring loud, and bonfires bright...

The young and old build this hut of dried twigs and leaves,
pretending its our little home for that one night,
some brings utensils from their houses,
while some, other ingredients, meat, grains and plenty of veggies...

Cooking done out in the open,
we then all enjoy a meal sumptuous,
with chatter and gossips running whole night,
till its time for ghost stories too at stroke of midnight...

The whole festivity is called Magh Bihu in our parts,
marking end of the harvest season,
where abundance and prosperity is celebrated with lots of joy,
finally, with a prayer to fire-God himself, the hut is lit at crack of dawn...
