"You are my breathe. You are part of my body. Till death we shan't part. I'll come very soon. Trust me Soni..." That was his promise made hundreds of times, over 4 years ago. Every time Soni remembered these words of his, her heart would bleed as though stabbed alive, with rivulets of tears that would gush down her cheeks uncontrolled. It was a long distance relation that started over the internet, with lot of promises, mushiness, but now all that left of it was - a sham! He was gone! Not once, but Raj had betrayed her over and over, several times. Crushed her heart - ripped her very soul apart, beyond repair. Shaken her faith off men forever, with his callousness. Yet despite all these, she still she loved him. She was a fool to be still so madly in love with her tormentor, else why would mere thoughts of him make her still so emotional, so vulnerable. "Still wasting your precious pearls for that jackass?" A voice from behind, jolted her back to the present. It was Varun smiling over her cubicle. "How many times I've asked you to forget that moron? You start looking like Nirupa Roy from the movies, when you cry like this." He already had a box of tissues that he handed to her with a chuckle, as Soni tried blindly groping for those, with her tear-filled eyes. "Look at the mascara - all smudged. Now you look like a vampire-ish version of Nirupa Roy," he continued to joke. Varun was always joking and pulling her leg. Though, a senior at office, she knew him from her college days. And although from same batch, they weren't exactly buddies then, even though there was a rumour floating around that time - that Varun had a mild crush on her. But he had never really said anything to her and everything had faded off over time, after college - in the hurly burly of life, careers etc. Until of course, her sudden posting to Delhi two years back, that brought her face to face with him again. And along with it, stirred back were certain long abandoned feelings from the past too. However, Soni was quite oblivious of that. She was just happy to have him as a friend in the new city, and he was as jovial as ever. Infact, Varun's sense of humour was the most famous thing in the entire campus in the past, and now she was witnessing it all over again, and from close range too - with her often being the butt of his jokes as well, though she didn't mind at all. Infact, this lively nature of his was so comforting - it made her smile, helped her forget the pain - well almost! She had confided in him, her failed-love story, when he was curious why she was still single. College was over years ago. Many of their old college mates were long married; some were already with their kids too. "But we both are still single. How ironic eh? All the rest are married with kids - but God has kept us single for weird reasons. Now to rub and ripen our raw wounds - he sadistically throws us together too - you an aging spinster, me a graying bachelor - face to face, tada!" Varun pulled his face comically. "Maybe God has some divine design behind this scheme of things, I suspect," he winked mischievously at her. "What you think, Soni?" Oh! He was so full of drama, Soni rolled her eyes. "Stop joking yaar. You don't even let me cry peacefully," she complained, pretending to be offended. But she couldn't be angry with Varun for long. Everything he said, or did, only made her smile away. She liked the positive vibes he brought along so naturally. Maybe, that was the secret behind his success. Both had passed from same college, studying almost the same courses - yet he was in top managerial position in her office. But thankfully, it didn't bring any attitude in him. He was still a pleasant, down to earth personality, as he was before - and now such a good friend of hers too. She didn't want to lose him as a friend. And what he said indeed made sense. "Why cry baby? That too for some jerk whom you never met in real? Be thankful for those who love you and are by your side." He had said. "By the way do you remember the platinum-couple's marriage anniversary we have to attend this evening?" Platinum Couple was the most senior set of colleagues in their office. Due for retirement that year, Mr.Ahuja and his wife Diana, both working in same office had invited everyone to celebrate - their wedding anniversary as well as pre-retirement bash. Coming from different backgrounds - culture, language, religion, traditions - their love ( spanning from their teens right up to their retirement age ), was as solid and strong as could be, and a great example for everyone. They were planning to go on yet another honeymoon, right after their retirement - hence, rightly named 'the platinum couple'. "Oh yes! How can I forget? They are such a lovely couple," Soni replied. "God bless them. They are so lucky to find true love in one another." "Good. So be ready by 8pm. I'll pick you up then. Now my lady cheer up and you have the liberty to go home early today," Varun said, and went to his own cabin. For Varun it was a bolt from the blue coming face to face with Soni after so many years. Ambition and whole lot of other hurdles had never really let him express to her his feelings whilst in college. And his work making him a busy globe trotter - college crushes were dumped in some remote corner of his mind - never meant to be dug. But he could hardly believe his eyes when he learnt about the new appointee in his office. It was Soni - and all his past feelings started brewing again, this time more strong more potent, coming back like a flash flood. But apparently Soni was nursing a broken heart, and romance was the last thing she wanted. So as a friend, he comforted her, stood by her. He was glad she considered him a friend at least. And he happily obliged her a shoulder to cry on if necessary. They joked, they laughed, they pulled each other's legs - and in last two years that they were in the same office, they had become quite good buddies. However very cautious, he never brought up the topic of love. He just wanted to be there for her, whenever she needed him. But like he jokingly questioned her if God had a plan behind bringing them back together - he did infact mulled over it seriously, while in private. Was there a design after all? Maybe they were meant to be. He wanted to find out. While buying a 'platinum set' a few days ago for the platinum couple - he couldn't help resist buying an extra set - just in case. Maybe it was too early. Maybe she'd reject outright. He didn't want to rush her or make her uncomfortable. But what was life without taking a little bit of risk? And he did like her lots - yes loved her too, if only she'd permit. He'd wait, give her the time and space she needed. He took the lovely 'set' in his hands and looked deeply at it. He had held her hands many times - albeit in a friendly manner - but it was enough to guess the size. He hoped it fitted. He also hoped fervently, feeling almost like a love-struck teenager, that she'd say 'yes' - when he finally popped the question. He'd do that one of these days, he thought. Would the Platinum Couple's Anniversary be the right time? "They're looking so lovely together. So heavenly!" Soni gushed excitedly, looking at the platinum couple welcoming and accepting all the wishes & bouquets from the arriving guests. The party was in full swing. They had already wished the couple and were sitting in the lounge observing other guests. Other colleagues too dropped by and sat near them, talking excitedly about how handsome the couple looked together. Diana was beaming like a new bride. It was hard to believe that she was almost reaching her sixties now. Love had kept the couple looking so young, like bubbly teenagers - well almost. "Seeing them so much in love, makes me want to believe in love all over again," Soni said, sighing to herself. But Varun was sitting near and heard her mutter instantly. His eyes were on her all evening, though she barely noticed his gaze, inspite of them both arriving together, in the same car! Love still exists and is very real if you give it a chance, my dear, he thought, taking in her soft beauty. She looked radiant, but so lost - so sad. He wanted to make her happy. If only he had that chance. If only! "Shall I get you a drink?" he asked instead. "Oh yes, but get me the soft one though," Soni replied, as Varun got up and walked to the bar. "What are you doing gal? You are hell bent on torturing him all the time," Tiya plopped down next to Soni, in the place Varun had just vacated. "What you mean?" Soni was surprised. Tiya was her talkative flashy office-cubicle mate. "Oh come on. Can't you see...that poor chap is madly in love with you and you treat him like a waiter." Soni's eyes widened in disbelief. Was Tiya drunk? She wondered. "No! I'm not drunk," Tiya continued, as though hearing her thoughts, "You are such a fool if you've not noticed it. Infact, the whole office has been gossiping about it for months now. That dude is in love with you, gal! Don't torture him so much and maybe you two could be our next 'platinum couple'! Or atleast give us a chance to hook up with him, if you're not interested in that gorgeous hunk of a man!" With that Tiya was gone, leaving Soni tongue-tied. Rest of the evening passed with both of them barely talking. Varun tried to be his humorous self, but Soni was still trying to go through what Tiya had said earlier in the evening, in her head over and over. Yes, she liked him too, a lot. But after being hurt so deeply in love - she was afraid. Too afraid of love; too afraid to trust! She had just hung on to his friendship, brushing away any stray romantic thought that came - she was infact quite content in that comfort zone. But she didn't think or realized what all these might be doing to Varun. And after what Tiya said, it really made her think. Suddenly she realized, behind all those jokes, all the banter - Varun was in deep pain. "So will you tell me or not. What's bugging you?" Varun was asking. They had left the party silently, and it was close to midnight now. He had parked his car in front of her apartment building. "Is it that jerk again?" He clenched his jaw, while his knuckles held the steering wheel tight. He was trying hard to control his feelings. If he had his way, he'd have killed that bastard. "No...I..aahh," Soni didn't know how to begin. "Varun...I feel ...I feel...," she stopped again. She was getting nervous now. "What do you feel?" Varun prompted huskily, looking at her intently. In such close proximity, with his handsome chiseled features so near, so prominent, feelings stirred inside her. She wanted to run her fingers down his face and touch him. She blushed suddenly, embarrassed at her thoughts. "Well?" he asked again. "Nothing...it was something Tiya said, about some office rumours." "What rumours?" Varun asked, although somewhere he had a fair enough idea of what it was about. He did roam around with his heart in his sleeves these days, and everyone noticed it - except Soni. Soni decided to speak it out this time, bravely. It wasn't easy for her. She felt nervous dealing with it. But she had to. "In the past in college, there were rumours too then, that I heard, but you never told me anything. This time I want to know if the rumours are true. Do you feel anything for me?" There was a silent pause, a long arduous one. "Well what do you think Soni? Does what I feel matters?" Varun spoke atlast, before turning fully towards her. "A person who buys an extra platinum set but keeps it in his pocket, instead of giving it to his love, does indeed feel lot of things. Yes, I feel a lot for you, but I don't want you to be troubled by what I feel." "You brought a platinum set?" Soni asked incredulously, hardly believing what she heard, "For for..me?" "Yes, my lady. I do crazy and foolish things most of the times, you know." Varun drawled. "Why didn't you tell me then...or give to me?" Soni asked. "Well, if you start noticing me for once, all the platinum in this world would be yours. I'd personally dig up every platinum mountain I find, if they exist, and crawl deep into the caves in the bowels of earth for that metal and polish or carve it with my own hands, in any shape you want. But your consent is very necessary you see." He was back to his jovial self, thank God for that! "Oh Varun, you're impossible!" Soni exclaimed. "So is that a Yes-Yes Varun or No Varun - see you at the boring office tomorrow?" "Well, maybe if you're bit romantic I might consider," Soni giggled. Varun's comical nature had her in splits. "But somehow you're fine just this way. Where's the platinum? Won't you give me now at least?" She asked eagerly. "Sure, my lady! And there I thought you hated romance, phew!" Like magic Varun took out the platinum set and placed one on her finger, slipping it in easily. He gave the gent's piece to her so that she could slip it on his finger. Soni had decided to chuck the past now. Here was the man who truely loved her, been her friend when she needed one the most. Crushing back his own feelings, he had stood by her. She didn't need to remember that jerk Raj anymore. Her real husband was with her, loving her every moment. Yes, they'd be the next Platinum Couple in their office. Gladly she slipped the ring into his finger. It was their platinum day of love! They hugged tight, cherishing their platinum moment. That moment promised many things ahead - and this time the promises would be for keeps, she knew it in her heart. Because real love can only begin, never end. And their love had begun....oh so fabulously! She had found the right man, her platinum man alas! "Accha! So, since you love romantic things now, the hug we just had was romantic enough or not? I think to be perfectly romantic, I need to hug you even more tighter and perhaps kiss you...." "Shut up Varun...see you tomorrow in the office....and I love you!" |
