Theme for Aug 09, 2013 'WOW' : ‘Use opposites!’ In your blog post this week, you have to use one sentence which has a pair of opposite words. For example, ‘Please answer my question’, is one such sentence with question and answer being the opposite words.
On the highway, in busy traffic, she walked ahead tentatively on its edges, while the honking vehicles zoomed past by her. Dizzy, she suddenly stopped on her tracks. She didn't feel too well. She was perspiring in the afternoon heat, but the sun above showed no mercy at her. Her lips were parched, but it was not water that she craved. She sought something else. She was hearing those voices again. Yes, without a doubt it was them, yet again. She had been trying to ignore them, avoid them, but still they came back. Slowly and persistently hounding her. They spoke to her at first, slow, but then gained momentum and became stronger, more aggressive. They would start to talk, debate, discuss, argue, accuse and fight with her and amongst themselves, all at the same time. Different voices, both male and female. They were many of them, making a cacophony of sounds, that buzzed deafeningly at her ears.
She would repeatedly plead them to stop, beg them to leave her alone. And they did. They would listen to her for a while, but then, start all over again. They would get more vicious, more taunting, more cunning and even threatening. They'll kill her, they'd warn. She tried to go into hiding, but they followed her too. They laughed at her and mocked, that she could never hide from them. They stalked her everywhere; at home, at work, even on the roads like they were doing today. Her life was a misery. She wanted to be free, but she was trapped, with them.
She tries to stand still, her head is spinning. She is now very afraid, that they would do her harm. They were getting closer and closer engulfing her, suffocating her. They have threatened her again. She is standing still, but her mind is running berserk, with thoughts of fright, of them. There's no escape from them. She cannot bear it anymore. She has to get rid of them or she'll go mad. She looks around desperately. They are all laughing at her, challenging her. She'll defeat them, she won't let them rule her life like this, she decides.
Seeing a speeding truck coming her way from a distance, she steps out on the road. Here was her chance, she could be free at last, she thought. Determinedly, she ignores the honk of the truck and walks straight ahead, towards it, until she collides headlong into the moving metal that makes a 'thud' sound on impact. She is thrown away aside instantly, like a limp doll, at a distance where she lies on a pool of blood, completely motionless.
She couldn't be free from them when she was alive, but now on her death, alas, the voices finally left her alone.
