GUILT

A sound distracted him. He gazed out of the window, his mind troubled.

He couldn’t get last night out of his mind. It pricked his conscience at what he did.

He was just leaving the bar, that he saw her by chance. He got chatting and bought her a drink.

New in town, with her trustful eyes, thinking him to be genuine, she asked him directions for a safe place to stay the night.

Taking advantage of her modest nature, he brought her to his place instead. What happened next, he could never forgive himself. The animal in him ravaged her.

  1. Even with a guilty conscience he can never compensate what he did to her, the rest of his life will be to repay that debt.

  2. For some reason I think his conscience won't be enough to stop him from acting out again in the future. I'm curious about the three underlined/bolded words and if there was a reason for that that I missed?

I was so intrigued as to what happened reading this, and I wonder if it might have been best without the very last line - just leave up to the readers to think of the worst thing that could have happened. Just a thought.

  5. I agree with the comments that say he's likely to do this again, more than once. That sense of power will overcome his conscience, such as it is.

Oh, my. I wonder at the phrasing, that it just pricked at his conscience, but that he thinks of it as animal, ravaging. A little guilty? Or a lot?

I don't know if guilt is enough to judge a man in such crimes ...but it is a beautifully written short story.

  8. Oof. I'm part way in to American Psycho so I read this piece in a particular way. Not nice. Well done.

  9. sounds like this is the first time he has done anything like this but I too am led to believe his troubled mind won't be troubled for too long and it could happen again. I also think that the last line is telling the reader and if it was left out the reader's own imagination can make his actions as bad as they want.

  10. Self realisation will make him to be careful in future. Good read.

  11. Interesting story in that this can happen with a "decent" person under certain circumstances and mental conditions. Good people can commit bad acts sometimes that they can't even explain. Well done.
