THE BELL RINGER

Copyright – David Stewart

Jim looked out through the window. The snow was gone; spring was in full bloom. But the playground was still empty. He remembered the times when the playground would be full of children, filled with laughter & chatter. It filled Jim’s empty life. A childless aging widower, the school and its playground were his life-line. He hated those vacations when all children went home.

“What’s up Jim! Haven’t rung the bell yet? It’s lunch time. Vacations are over. Remember?” the school headmaster said, from behind.

Jim’s eyes lit up as he rang the bell. The playground would be filled soon.

  1. I'm so glad he didn't turn out to be a pervert. I think that, except for the vacations, he had a job that was perfect for keeping his life from being lonely. Nice perspective on the photo.

Hurrah! A happy twist at the end. This reminds me of so many people from my life, including my father, who, though not a widower, enjoyed working as a janitor at a private junior high/high school. The kids loved him as much as he loved them.
