THE ICE-CUTTERS

The Ice Cutters, 1911, Natalia Goncharova

In the freezing out they stand,
While the numbing cold threaten,
They slog to cut those thick hard blocks,
To smoothen someone’s way, their fingers frost,
Craving warmth they sing amongst themselves,
Cheering each other, they encourage,
The day is long and their work plenty,
Do not falter, their mind warns, times a many,
When alas, the road is clear of the ice,
They are repaid with satisfied smiles.
