FLOWER CHILD

In the sweltering heat, she sits,
By the corner of the street,
Awaiting a car to pass by,
Any car that'd stop,
And feed her empty stomach,
She is too proud to beg though,
She works hard for a living, and how,
Balancing delicately a basket of flowers,
She hunts in traffic, her customers,
Every flower sold, shall earn her a penny,
To kill hunger, hers and her family's,
A responsible little lass,
Too matured for her age,
Whilst she should be in school studying,
Harsh realities, destiny is tutoring.

  1. Oh, this is such a sad reality for way too many little ones. I'm glad you reminded us of this. This would be such a good poem for more privileged children.

  4. True, every word of it.. years ago I met a girl selling flowers, she pleaded me to buy the last bunch.. she looked educated and I asked her if she was.. yes she said, she sold flowers in the evening to help her parents make a living.. she was on 4th std and wanted to get back home to do her homework. Needless to say, I was her last customer for the day.
